When was the last time you looked inside a kettle? Like your favorite pair of jeans, your kettle will last a long time before needing to be washed. So let's wash the inside of the kettle on this occasion. You can use whatever you have in the kitchen to wash it.
How dirty is the inside of the kettle?
Because a kettle is just for boiling water, the inside doesn't get dirty, right? If you leave your kettle unwashed for more than a few weeks, you may notice mineral deposits building up inside. It's probably the same limescale as the white, chalk-like deposits that stick around sinks and bathroom tiles. According to American Home Water and Air (AHWA), limescale is the calcium and carbonate ions found in hard water (here is AHWA's definition of hard and soft water). Also, leaving water in the kettle for days (or weeks) can cause rust. Thankfully, there are easy and quick cleaning methods to bring your kettle back to like-new condition. I've previously told you how to wash an electric kettle with powdered citric acid. Here's another method from Real Simple magazine. Materials to prepare •White vinegar •Baking soda •Lemon juice Washing instructions Put 1/4 cup of white vinegar and 2 cups of water in a kettle. and simmer for 20 minutes. Then let it cool and rinse well. If the vinegar cleans away any mineral deposits, you can stop here, or you can wash thoroughly in the next step. • Put 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and water into a kettle. • Boil for 30 minutes (be careful not to empty the kettle). • Allow to cool, then rinse thoroughly and dry.
How to prevent future limescale build-up
The easiest way to prevent rust and lime scale is to empty the kettle after use and allow the water to remain inside until the next day. is to avoid being left behind. Also, like other dishes, the kettle should be washed regularly with dish soap. Now you are ready to make a delicious cup of tea. Source: American Home Water and Air 1, 2, Real Simple
